They are in everything that surrounds people. In everything it touches, yet they go completely unnoticed by the human eye until it’s too late… when the signs of an infection begin, but what are germs and how to kill them?
We explain it to you in a simple and easy way through this video, so that even the little ones at home can understand it:
See-TheGuardians of Hygiene-Chapter I👇👇👇👇👇.
Every child wants a pet. Dogs, cats, fish, birds… and to ask, they would even like to have a horse! Whenever you think of animals, these and, of course, giraffes, lions and elephants come to mind. The same is true if we talk about living beings. Just add some flowers and plants, and that’s it. Only what they know and especially what they see. However, you should know that there are an estimated 8 to 15 million species in the world, although only a little more than 1,700,000 have been identified and described. Not bad at all. Let’s see who is the smart one who can memorize the complete list for an exam. Especially considering that each year the list is growing by some 18,000 new ones.
Similarly, it is believed that there are 1.5 million different species of fungi and another 10 million bacteria worldwide. Viruses are more difficult to calculate: 1031 and that’s a lot of variety.
It is not an easy task because the problem is that most of them cannot be seen, but they can be felt… Invisible to the eye, but present in everything that is touched. Just to get an idea, with any child’s teddy bear there can be thousands of tiny creatures per square centimeter. They are there and they are not just mites. That’s just one species out of millions. So many and so varied creatures that they are generically called germs. Not all of them are bad, but you have to be careful. In fact, they are part of the planet’s biological diversity and play a fundamental role in ecosystems, even though they can sometimes be unpleasant for people. Therefore, it is important to take measures to prevent and control its spread.
So, what are germs?
Nor should one think, as most children do, that germs are insects, miniature monsters or other still disgusting things. Germs are tiny microorganisms, living things, that can cause disease. So small and stealthy that they sneak into the body unnoticed through openings that lead to the inside such as the nose, mouth, ears or a cut in the skin. They travel in liquids or air that enters or exits through coughs and sneezes, saliva or even blood. They are so, so small that you need to use a microscope to see them and you only know they have gotten inside when symptoms of disease appear. Worst of all, they are everywhere and in everything you touch. From toys to the floor they crawl on.
What types of germs are there in the world?
The number of germ species in the world is difficult to determine since the term “germ” does not refer to a specific taxonomic category. In general, the term is used colloquially to refer to microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa that can cause infectious diseases in humans or other living beings. Different, but they all have something in common. They have creepy names that can cause nightmares, such as Escherichia coli or Staphylococcus aureus. They make you sleepy!
- Bacteria: tiny single-celled creatures obtain nutrients from their environment in order to live. In some cases, that habitat is the human body. Thus, they can cause ear infections, sore throat (tonsillitis or strep throat), stomach problems and, in the most severe cases, even pneumonia. Also caries. That is why you should wash your hands well before eating and your teeth afterwards.
However, not all bacteria are bad. Some are beneficial and help to make better use of the nutrients in food and to produce waste from what is left over. It is also used to manufacture medicines and vaccines.
- Virus: A type of germ that needs to be inside living cells to grow and reproduce. Most viruses cannot survive for long if they are not inside a living thing such as a plant, animal or person. Like bacteria, viruses enter people’s bodies, can spread and cause diseases such as chicken pox, measles, influenza or, for example, Covid-19.
- Mushrooms: Not to be confused with mushrooms, although they are very similar to many plants. Unlike the latter, they cannot manufacture their own food from soil, water and air. They get it from other living beings and love to live in dark, warm and humid places. For example, between the toes. In general they are not very dangerous, but cause discomfort such as rash, itching and bad odor.
- Protozoa: These single-celled organisms also love water and humidity. Especially if it is stagnant in rivers and lakes. They often transmit diseases that cause diarrhea, nausea and stomach pain. They also have a positive impact on the environment. They break down organic matter in the soil and are very important in the aquatic food chain. Essential for fish.
